Opening of the World Ski Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the 7th of February 2011


German Chancellor Angela Merkel attended the opening ceremony, as well as the Federal Minister of the Interior Thomas de Maizière, the Bavarian Minister-President Horst Seehofer and the mayor of Munich Christian Ude. Sports and culture will harmonise in the fantastic setting of nature and mountains until the 20th of February, in and around Garmisch-Partenkirchen, already home of the World Ski Championships in 1978.


About 11000 spectators enjoyed a breathtaking show.


The motto of the Word Ski Championships „Festival in the snow - naturally Bavarian" expresses that the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2011 are more than a sports event. Garmisch-Partenkirchen has been home to sports for many decades. But the cultural aspect has also always been of high significance.


Next to the numerous stages and museums, the World Championships Pavilion, constructed especially for the World Ski Championships in the lively pedestrian center of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, will be home to various cultural events. The World Championships Park in the heart of Garmisch-Partenkirchen offers an idyllic atmosphere for the award ceremonies in the evenings and a perfect setting for musical theme parties with famous German disc jockeys - finest entertainment particularly for the many fan clubs of the athletes.
