49th Munich Conference on Security Policy: US VP Joe Biden guest of honor of the Bavarian MP at the traditional evening reception

The International Conference on Security Policy in Munich has taken place yearly since 1962, under the motto "Peace through dialogue". As the greatest meeting of this kind worldwide, it gathers international politicians in charge of security, army representatives and defence industrials. Nevertheless, being a privately organized event, it doesn't count as an official governments' meeting: Participants take part in informal and non-binding discussions.

In 2013, the Conference will start on February 1st in the Munich Hotel Bayerischer Hof. Numerous high-ranking guests are awaited, e.g. American Vice President Joe Biden, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergej Lawrow, NATO General Secretary Anders Fogh Rasmussen, EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso, several heads of States and governments, as well as more that 50 Ministers of Security and Foreign Affairs from all over the world.

The themes for this year's Conference will cover among others the crises in Mali and Syria, transatlantic cooperation within NATO, the role of so-called "rising powers" in international security, Europe's and the Eurozone's future, cyber-security as well as the responsibility to protect.

The Bavarian Minister of Federal and European Affairs, Mrs. Emilia Müller, together with Philip Dunton Murphy, Ambassador of the United States of America in Berlin, and William Ernest Moeller III, General Secretary of the United States of America in Munich, will welcome American Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Dr. Jill Biden on Franz-Josef-Strauß airport in Munich. VP Biden is to be Bavarian Minister-President Horst Seehofer's guest of honor at the traditional evening reception in the Residenz on February 2nd.
