The Bavarian capital is the city with the highest quality of living in Germany. This is the result of a global survey by the Mercer consulting firm. Especially the high quality of housing as well as the excellent medical care in Munich secured the city’s top ranking, maintaining its 2013 ranking.

In comparison to other European cities, Munich ranks 3rd after Vienna and Zurich. Worldwide, Munich holds a remarkable 4th place among 223 cities. Only the New Zealand capital Auckland manages to squeeze in additionally. “The examined German cities score well or even very well. Due to the high quality of housing and the excellent health care, Munich has secured the top national rank”, says Mercer spokesperson Brigitte Ludwig.

The study’s results are based upon 39 criteria for quality of living, which are evaluated by employees working abroad (so called “expatriates”). Among these criteria, political, social, economic and ecologic factors as well as personal healthcare, security, public services and education are considered.

The Top 5 in the overall ranking:

  1. Vienna (Austria)
  2. Zurich (Switzerland)
  3. Auckland (New Zealand)
  4. Munich (Germany)
  5. Vancouver (Canada)

More rankings for German cities:  6th Düsseldorf, 7th Frankfurt, 16th Berlin.
