The Institute of Economy Cologne has found the Munich region to be the most prosperous and successful region of Germany. The ranking of the regions which is conducted by IW Consult regularly evaluates a series of data ranging from the job market to the economical structure and quality of life – for a total of 402 cities and communities. Regions in the South of Germany obtained the highest rankings. 88 of the most prosperous 100 regions are located in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. A graphical overview can be found here.

Similarly, Munich Airport has been distinguished by the Skytrax Institute as the third best airport worldwide. This is an improvement of three ranks in comparison to 2012. The inquiry was made among passengers who evaluated about 39 criteria including Check-In, arrival area, transfer, shopping facilities, security, entry requirements and departing area. Only Singapore and Seoul ranked superior to Munich.

Ultimately, Munich remains a popular tourism destination with about 12,9 million overnight stays in 2013. Compared to 2012, Munich was able to bring in a plus of 4,9 percent and to set a new record. Especially striking is the number of overnight-stays of foreign visitors: with 6,3 million guest-nights registered, Munich scored 6,9 percent higher than in last year. Frontrunner within the international guests are the visitors from the United States with 711.000 overnight-stays annually.
