In most Bavarian episcopal cities there is at least one high-level choir attached to the local cathedral, singing for religious celebrations and services. In Bamberg, the Girls’ Choir (“Mädchenkantorei”) was created in 1989 and has earned a solid reputation since: in 1997 and again in 2005, the choir won first prize in the yearly Bavarian choirs competition.

At the end of Summer 2017, the Bamberg Girls’ Choir will sing in Canada – Toronto, Peterborough, Montreal and Ottawa. Under the  lead of Mr. Werner Pees, chapel master of the Bamberg cathedral, the Mädchenkantorei will perform a varied repertoire ranging from Renaissance to 20th century pieces, religious as well as folk tradition.

The tour takes place as a counter-visit to the Ottawa Christ Church Cathedral Girls’ Choir visit to Bavaria in 2016. In Peterborough, the participants will meet descendants of the little Franconian community that emigrated in the 1950s and 1960s. In Montreal, a common rehearsal is planned with the German International Alexander von Humboldt school’s own choir, as well as a concert at the beautiful Notre-Dame basilica in Old Montreal.
