MUNICH. Barbara Stamm, the President of the Bavarian Landtag, presented Jacques Chagnon, President of the National Assembly of Québec, with the golden Bavarian Constitution Medal in Gold. This is the highest distinction awarded by the Landtag, which Mr. Chagnon received for his long-standing commitment towards the friendship between Bavaria and Quebec. In her honorific speech, Barbara Stamm explained:

„You have been helping towards creating a basis of understanding between our peoples for years. You have represented your province as a deputy of the National Assembly of Quebec since 1985 and have been president of the parliament as well as head of the Delegation for relations to Bavaria since 2011. Ever since, you have committed yourself to promoting the continuous exchange between Québec and Bavaria. The fact that the connection between our regional parliaments has now become far more than merely an official partnership written on paper is largely to your credit. You build bridges between our regions, you have contributed outstandingly to transnational cooperation, and I am very happy to honor your commitment with this golden Bavarian Constitution Medal today."

Bavaria is currently hosting a delegation of MNAs from its partner region Québec until March 2nd. Their program includes a session of the joint parliamentary commission on the following topics:  “Nursing crisis – measures to support young trainees in the social sector”, “Measures to promote young professionals in farming”, “Intermodal public transport and active transport – cycling infrastructure”, “E-commerce, taxation and statutory provisions”. Moreover, the delegation will attend local meetings and visits in Allgäu and in the Tegernsee region.

The partnership between the parliaments of Québec and Bavaria was established in 1999.  By now, the sessions of the joint parliamentary commission are held once a year, alternately in Québec and Bavaria, on current topics of common interest, through which both regions can learn from each other.
