Bavaria’s Startup Scene: strong growth in 2018 makes for record-breaking year

According to a newly released study by Ernst & Young, 2018 was a record-breaking year for Germany in terms of risk-capital investment, as 4.6 bn € were invested into up-and-coming companies, e.g. an increase of 7% over one year. Even the total number of investments reached an all-time high at 615 – up from 507 in the previous year.

This tendency was particularly strong in Bavaria. The southern Land remains second on federal level, but boasted serious increases over 2018: deals sealed in Bavaria grew by 63%, from 76 to 124 in total. Even stronger was the volume growth of said deals, which nearly doubled in 2018: from €407 million to €802 million.

“Bavaria as a startup location, centered around the Munich area, is currently developing strongly and catching up in big steps. The coexistence of top R&D, remarkable economic power with many DAX-companies, and a high concentration of risk-capital investors, when paired with an outstanding quality of life, contributes to some very promising dynamics.”, said Hubert Barth, President of EY Germany.
