Nautical joust in Bavaria

Every year since 1985, when this end-of-19th century festivity was brought back to reality, a nautical joust livens up the rivers of lake Staffelsee. Each Assumption Day (August 15th) sees 24 young men from the village of Seehausen pit their strength against each other's in a show directly inspired from the Middle-Ages: two dinghys are fitted with a long wooden plank standing from which the competitors must rush their counterparts to waters using a long wooden stick. Similar jousts take place in several European villages, one of the most renowned of them in Sète (Southern France).
