Bavaria and Greece: Closer than one thinks

During the 19th century, Otto, the second son of king Ludwig I of Bavaria, became the first king of Greece. As a reminder of his native land, the new king introduced the blue-and-white colors that, to this day, still form the Greek national flag.

It dates also back to this time that the word « Bayern » was written with a 'y': since the kings now had ties to Greece, the 'y' was imported from the Greek alphabet into the name of the Free State. Thus the Bavarians changed name, from "Baiern" becoming "Bayern".
