Hohenpeißenberg, the oldest mountain weather station in the world

Weather station Hohenpeißenberg

The Meteorological Observatory Hohenpeißenberg is located about 60 kilometers to the southwest of Munich, Bavaria, and is the oldest mountain observatory in the world. It has been collecting meteorological data since 1781. It is affiliated with the German Meteorological Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst, DWD) and conducts ozone research, aerosol and trace gas measurements, radar meteorology and weather observations.

Because of its over 225 year old history, this observatory is of the utmost importance for weather and climate research. The long measurement series it has registered have given way to many discoveries about the terrestrial atmosphere, on top of being used to serve different purposes and as a basis for international science publications in the past centuries.

The series of measures registered at Hohenpeißenberg ranks among the longest ever, and most importantly, it was never impacted by urban heat island effects usually accompanying construction in the vicinity – a problem encountered by the Basel and Prag observatories.
