Faber Castell, one of the leading pencil producers worldwide, looks back on a more than 250 year-old company history which started in a little village in Bavaria. In 1660, a few pencil makers were settled in the city of Nuremberg.

One of them is Kaspar Faber, a carpenter, who is successful enough in his pencil making technique to open up his very own business.  A few years later his son Anton Wilhelm acquires land with a producing facility near Stein, from where he is able to transform his father’s artisanship into a prosperous manufacture. To this day, Faber-Castell is headquartered there.

It is for the sake of Lothar von Faber, the 3rd Faber generation, that the production facilities are modernised and internationalised throughout the 19th century. Investing in a graphite mine in Siberia, Lothar secures its firm an excellent raw material as well as an outstanding advantage in the European market. Attaching the highest importance on quality and the exclusive presentation of its products (see picture on the right, www.faber-castell.de), Lothar von Faber systematically labels them „A.W. Faber“ – and that is how the first brand-pencil was born.

Nevertheless, Lothar Faber is conscious of the social problems that come with the industrialisation. Early on, he founds social institutions that will become common place later, like a company kindergarten and a company health insurance – the oldest one in Bavaria.

Today, Anton Wolfgang Earl of Faber-Castell, representing 8th generation of the family, leads the empire.

In 2014, the NY Times boasted a short video about Faber-Castell.
