The media in Bavaria

Bavaria is a leading player in media production. When combined with the ICT sector, Munich's media industry – print and audiovisual – boasts an annual sales volume of over 70 billion euros and employs over 250,000 people. The creative industry in the greater Munich area ranks among the most dynamic ones in Europe: according to a study to be released in Spring 2012, Munich is Europe's 8th cultural and creative city with 11% of its companies in the creative industry, whereas the German average scores 7.6%.

40% of German film production originates in Munich, with about 2,000 film production companies, employing 23% of all German wage-earners in this sector. 20 radio stations and 30 television channels are headquartered in Munich, and over one third of all German TV channels are in Bavaria.

Bavaria is also one of the world leaders in print media:

  • some 550 Bavarian companies employ a total of 51,000 people, i.e., 20% of the total working force of all 16 Länder
  • Munich is the second most prominent city after New York for print publications
  • 23 of the 100 largest German companies in this sector are headquartered in Bavaria

Among Bavaria’s big names in audiovisual production are Bayerischer Rundfunk (radio and TV), ProSiebenSat.1, Premiere, Bavaria Film, Sony BMG, ARRI Cine Technik (cameras). The print media landscape boasts names such as Süddeutscher Verlag, C.H.Beck, Langenscheidt, Random House / Bertelsmann, Hubert Burda Verlag, etc.
