Research in Bavaria

Bavaria's research landscape features:

  • 9 state universities, the federal university of the Armed Forces and the Catholic university of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt
  • 17 state institutions of higher education (HAW)
  • 12 Max Planck institutes
  • 9 Fraunhofer Gesellschaft institutes
  • 8 other federal research institutions (Helmholtz Zentrum, DLR, etc.)
  • 3.94 bn Euros (9.5% of the 2009 budget) are allocated to higher education institutions
  • over 3,300 university professors (private hospitals included), including over 1,600 tenured professors
  • more than 2,000 professors in the higher education institutions (HAW) ; 270,000 students in 2009-2010

Coordination of scientific cooperation

Within the overall Bavaria-Quebec and Bavaria-Alberta cooperation, the Bavarian Research Alliance (bayFOR – Bayerische Forschungsallianz) holds an Office for Research Coordination, dedicated to supporting and coordinating activities and exchanges in the scientific and technological fields. The Coordination Office also manages the Bavarian government's support programs targeted at young scientists and researchers.
Activities of the Coordination Office for Research:
  • over 60 research projects completed
  • scientific, administrative and financial support, from project planning to completion
  • networking activities between various research authorities in Bavaria and its partner regions (Quebec and Alberta)
  • development of university/company partnerships
